IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN HANDLING TELEPHONE CALLS THROUGH CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING

Abstract


Speaking needs to be developed and practiced actively and continuously since it is one of the most essential skills in language teaching and learning. Speaking represents a real challenge to most language learners because they have to produce something orally which needs more confidence in doing it. Teaching speaking through Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is one of the ways that can be used. CTL engages students in significant activities that help them connect academic studies to their context in real life situation. The aim of the research is to improve students’ speaking ability in handling telephone calls through Contextual Teaching and Learning. The participant of the research is the second grader students of SMK YAPSA Gunung Putri, Bogor. The method of the research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which had been done in two cycles. The goal of the research is 90% of the students get more than 70 as the standard score. After the treatment of the first cycle, the result shows that 3 students (7.5%) are fair, 4 students (10%) are good, 17 students (42.5%) are very good, and 16 students (40%) are excellent. The result of the second treatment shows that 4 students (10%) are good, 16 students (40%) are very good, and 20 students (50%) are excellent. The result indicates that Contextual Teaching and Learning can improve students’ speaking ability in handling telephone calls.
