AN ANALYSIS STUDY OF SWEARWORDS USED IN ROMANTIC MOVIES

Abstract


Sometimes swearwords are used in daily communication to show certain feeling. It is also used in movie by the characters including romantic movie. The aims of this research are to investigate what swearwords appeared in the movies and the meaning of those swearwords. In conducting the research, the writer used descriptive method. The result of this research shows that there are some swearwords found in three romantic movies entitled, “A Cinderella Story”, “Titanic”, and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” such as damn, hell, son of a bitch, shit, goddamned, filth, fucking, bastard, moron, slut, bloody, and butt. Swearword “damn” is used to express annoyance, angry, very, and surprise. “Son of a bitch” is used to express happiness and anger. “Hell” is used to express disappointment, unbelievable, annoyance, anger, scare/fear, curiosity, and confusion. “Shit” is used to express annoyance, disappointment, surprise, and unbelievable. “Goddamn/goddamned” is used to express surprise, suspicion, distrustful, happiness, annoyance, and anger. “Filth” is used to express angry feeling. “Fucking” is used to express angry feeling. “Bastard” is used to express annoyance and anger. “Bloody” is used to emphasize the word. “Butt” is used to express annoyance, mock and joke. “Moron” is used to express angry feeling. “Slut” is used to express angry feeling. In this research, the writer compares her analysis with the analysis made by experts. The writer concludes that those swearwords are not only to express bad feeling but also good feeling.
