AN ANALYSIS STUDY ON STUDENTS DIFFICUTIES IN UNDERSTANDING THE IMPLIED MEANING OF POEMS
Abstract
Reading poem is different from reading other literary work because poem has implied meaning that force the reader to understand more the hidden meaning of it. The title of this research is “An Analysis Study on Students’ Difficulties in Understanding the Implied Meaning of Poems”. The aims of this research are to know the students’ difficulties in understanding the implied meaning of poems andthe causes of them. The writer uses descriptive method in conducting the research. In this case study, purposive sampling technique was used by taking class E of the seven semester students in English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Pakuan University which consist of 16 students. To get the research data, she used three kinds of instrument: documentation, questionnaire and interview. According to the result of the research, students have difficulties in differentiating literal and implied meaning.They cannot find the implied meaning and they do not understand idiom or phrase that used in poem then they do not know the theme or mind idea of the poem. The students’ habit to translate word by word also makes them difficult.Moreover, they do not know about language used in poem. The causes of those difficulties are because they do not know about figurative language, do not enjoy the poem, do not know about type of poem and do not want to ask lecturer when they have difficult in understanding the implied meaning of poems. Therefore, the writer suggests,the students have to understand more about figurative language so, they can enjoy the poems then the students have to ask the lecturer when get problem in understanding the implied meaning of poems.
