AN ANALYSIS STUDY OF CODE-MIXING AND CODE-SWITCHING USED BY MATHEMATICS TEACHERS
Abstract
Code-mixing and code-switching are social phenomenon. It happens because people use more than one language to interact each other. In bilingual classes, teachers mix and switch the languages, especially English and Bahasa Indonesia. It happens in some subjects, including Mathematics. In this research, the writer analyzes the reason of using code-mixing and code-switching, the application of code-mixing and code-switching in the classroom, and the situation where the teachers mix and switch the language by using descriptive method. As the research site, the writer chooses SMPN 4 Bogor and two Mathematics teachers were selected as the research participants. Observation, interview and documentation are used as the research instruments to collect the data. The result shows that the reason of using code-mixing and code-switching is to make the students understand the material. The teachers apply code-mixing and code-switching naturally because those classes are bilingual. They mix and switch the languages mostly in explaining material and giving instruction.
