STUDENTS ABILITY IN TRANSFORMING A POEM INTO A NARRATIVE TEXT

Abstract


The title “Students’ Ability in Transforming a Poem into a Narrative Text” is intended to analyze the students’ ability to transform a poem into a narrative text. The research was conducted at English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences of Pakuan University Bogor. To get the data, the writer used documentation, questionnaire and interview. The writer used students’ work as the document to analyze. She chose the third semester students and chose class E. Then,she chose nine respondents who got the lower, medium and the higher scores as the representation. To conduct the research, she focused in using generic structure and past tense. The research result shows that students’ ability have average achievement in using generic structure, because they did not tell the story in detail. Then, their ability have average achievement in using past tense. Although narrative text uses past tense, present tense still arose in the students’ work. Based on the result of the research, the writer suggests that the students have to read carefully and make sure that they can understand the whole content of poem, because it will make them easier to transform it into a narrative text. They also are expected to learn grammar, because there are some mistakes found in their writing narrative text.
