TEACHING STRATEGIES IN ENCOURAGING YOUNG LEARNER PARTICIPATION IN AN ENGLISH CLASS
Abstract
Teaching strategy is an essential component of teaching learning process because teacher needs strategies to achieve the purpose of the study. However, many teachers get difficulties in teaching English to young learners because young learners have unique and different characteristics. The aim of the research is to investigate the teaching strategies performed by the teacher in encouraging young learner participation in an English class. To conduct the research, an English teacher of young learner class at Primagama is choosen as the participant. Purposive sampling technique was used to choose the participant since qualitative approach was applied. Descriptive method was used to conduct the research. Non test instruments were employed to collect the data. They were observation, questionnaire and interview. Based on the result of the research, it is found that there were ten teaching strategies used by the teacher which were successful to gain learner participation. They were: asking question, using body language, choosing appropriate topics, providing teaching aids, presenting activity, giving commands, using games, modeling, reviewing, and creating teamwork. The interaction of these ten teaching strategies occurred between learner - content, learner - learner, and learner - teacher. However, the most significant strategies that are frequently used by the teacher in encouraging young learner participation are: asking questions, presenting activity, giving commands and reviewing. In addition, the interaction which occurred most frequently was the interaction of learner - content.
