Abstract

Reading is one of the language skills which play an important role in learning English. Efficient reading consists of clearly identifying the purpose of reading something. The students are demanded to understand the message and the idea of the text. It means that they have to comprehend the text they read. Unfortunately, the students of English Education Study Program sometimes have problem in making questions, even though their reading comprehension is good. Thus, this paper is written to find out whether there is a correlation between students’ reading comprehension and their ability to make intensive questions. The research was conducted from 30th May 2012 to 4th June 2012 in English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Pakuan University. The writer used correlation method with Ex Post Facto design. She chooses the eighth semester students as the population as many as 209 students and she uses proportional random sampling technique by taking 15 % from total number of the students. Thus, she got 31 students as the sample. After she had got the data, she calculated it using Pearson Product Moment Formula. The calculation shows that the value of rxy (0.595) is higher than rtable (at significant level of 99% is (0.456)) with df 29. Based on the result, the hypothesis of this research is accepted. It means there is a positive correlation between students’ reading comprehension and their ability to make intensive questions.
